Today we’re going to be taking a look at the new vegan-friendly SPORT Protein made by Performance Lab.

Product website:

Protein powders are arguably the most popular sports nutrition supplements out there, and they are commonly used by both gym-goers and bodybuilders alike.

The type of protein powder you go for will usually come down to personal preference, but there can be no denying that there has been a rise in the demand for plant-based vegan options in recent years.

Performance Lab’s new SPORT Protein offering is a chocolate-flavored vegan-friendly option for those looking to up their intake of dietary protein. Our friends over at Opti-Nutra were kind enough to gift us a tub to try out for ourselves.

The purpose of this review article is for us to take a close look at this supplement and assess where it stands in a crowded market.

So, with the introductions out of the way, let’s begin taking a closer look at the basic things you need to know about the Performance Lab SPORT Protein.

Performance Lab SPORT Protein – The Basics

The Performance Lab range of supplements is made by a company called Opti-Nutra. Among their wide range of products are supplements such as pre workouts, multivitamins, BCAAs and more.

Editor's note: The health claims about the ingredients mentioned in this article are listed as authorised on the EU Register at the time of publishing.

Opti-Nutra are also the same company behind the popular ‘nootropic’ supplement Mind Lab Pro.

The SPORT Protein supplement is the company’s first-ever entrance into the protein powder market. It’s a vegan-friendly, premium-priced supplement aimed at delivering quality ingredients in good doses.

One tub is 600g and is the equivalent of 20 servings if you stick to the recommended dosage instructions.

Protein supplements are popular, mainly because it’s well-known that protein contributes to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass.

The official Performance Lab website says that this supplement is the world’s “cleanest and most effective” protein powder. That is certainly quite some claim indeed.

The supplement uses a patented form of organic brown rice protein called Oryzatein®, and it also includes some other ingredients such as active bacteria.

What’s impressive about the Performance Lab range of supplements is their clean and simple formulas. They include as few ‘filler’ ingredients as possible. Indeed, Performance Lab’s capsule-based supplements only contain two ingredients aside from the active ones – the plant-based capsule and rice concentrate.

We think this is a great move, as more and more people are becoming conscious of the other ingredients included in supplement formulas.

The Performance Lab SPORT Protein supplement currently only comes in one flavor – chocolate. This is one of the downsides of this supplement – many other brands offer more choice in terms of flavors.

So, now that we have covered some of the basic things that you need to know about the Performance Lab SPORT Protein supplement, it’s time to start taking a closer look at its ingredients to see what it’s made of, literally.

The Ingredients

Let’s begin this important part of our review by taking a look at the actual ingredients contained in SPORT Protein.

Here is the full ingredients label and nutrition facts panel for this supplement:

As you can see for yourself, each two-scoop serving of SPORT Protein contains 20g of protein from Oryzatein®.

While this isn’t a spectacular amount, you’ll usually find that vegan protein powders tend to contain smaller amounts of protein than other types, such as whey for example.

What’s also pretty cool about the ingredients label is the fact that Performance Lab have also disclosed the amounts of other certain important nutrients on the label.

For example, each serving of SPORT Protein contains some important vitamins such as Vitamin A and Vitamin D, along with minerals like Potassium, Iron and Calcium.

Performance Lab have also attempted to go down a more natural route in terms of flavorings. Instead of using a sweetener such as Sucralose, Performance Lab have opted to to add the sweetness to their product using Organic Monk Fruit and Organic Stevia extracts.

The formula also includes some of the active bacteria – Bacillus Coagulans, which is a nice addition.

All in all, the ingredients formula looks like a very clean one to us, and probably more so than a lot of the other similar supplements out there on the market.

The Taste and Flavor

Now it’s time to take a look at the taste and flavor of this supplement. These are two really key things to bear in mind when it comes to choosing the right vegan protein powder.

We’re going to level with you – the Performance Lab SPORT Protein is not the best-tasting protein supplement we’ve ever tried. However, it’s also certainly not the worst. The clean ingredients label and strong formula are two major plusses.

We tried the chocolate flavor in two ways. First, we mixed it straight into water as the directions suggest. Interestingly, this tasted pretty good, although the real chocolate flavor didn’t really kick in until the aftertaste.

We also tried blending it into our usual post-workout smoothie containing half a banana, blueberries, raspberries and oats. Here, the flavor profile just didn’t sit well with us. Perhaps is partly to do with the fact that we usually use a vanilla-flavored supplement in our smoothies.

All in all, we found the the Performance Lab SPORT Protein powder tasted best when mixed into water alone. And it will probably taste even better if you’re willing to mix it with a plant-based milk drink.

How To Take It

As mentioned above, each tub of Performance Lab SPORT Protein is 600g. This is the equivalent of 20, two-scoop servings.

The directions are fairly straightforward. They simply recommend that you should mix two scoops (30g total) with 8-12 oz of water.

They also suggest that you should take it two to three hours prior to, or immediately after, your workout.

Price and Where To Buy

Generally speaking, vegan protein powders tend to be more expensive than other options such as whey protein.

There is no getting away from the fact that this is a premium-priced supplement. The Performance Lab SPORT Protein currently costs $59 / £49 per tub on the official website.

You can save some money on the price per tub if you’re willing to commit to buying more than one at a time from the official site.

Right now, you can only buy the Performance Lab range of supplements directly from the manufacturer on the official website. This means that you will not find it in the shops or on other sites such as Amazon or GNC.

Performance Lab SPORT Protein Reviews

One downside of the Performance Lab range of supplements only being available on the official site is that it means that we cannot check out customer reviews on other retailers such as Amazon.

This makes it a bit tricky to read up on some verified customer reviews when it comes to the Performance Lab range.

Yes, there are plenty of positive reviews posted on the official Performance Lab website, but we tend to play down what appears on manufacturer websites, as they can often be a bit overly positive.

What About Side Effects?

We recommend that you speak to your doctor before taking a new supplement or making any major lifestyle changes.

There is a warning on the label saying not to use this supplement if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or under the age of 18.

The label also says that you should consult with your doctor before taking this or any supplement if you have or suspect a medical condition and/or are taking any medication.

The warnings also state that you should immediately discontinue using this product and seek medical advice if you experience any adverse reactions from taking it.

As mentioned above, it’s really important that you check the label of any product you purchase and carefully read through the warnings and directions before using it.

Pros and Cons

Let’s now weigh up some of the pros and cons when it comes to Performance Lab SPORT Protein.

• Clean, clear ingredients label
• Patented organic protein source (Oryzatein®)
• Includes active bacteria Bacillus Coagulans

• An expensive option
• You can only buy it from the official site
• Only one flavor – Chocolate

Anything Else to Consider?

There are always a few things to bear in mind when it comes to supplements in general.

You should remember that supplements are not intended to replace a varied diet and healthy overall lifestyle.

You can get protein from plenty of food sources, and a supplement like this one should only really be used to help “top up” your protein intake from dietary sources.

It’s also important to speak to your doctor before trying a new supplement or making any major lifestyle changes.

Review Conclusion – Final Thoughts

That brings us to the end of our Performance Lab SPORT Protein review.

Overall, we think that this is a very well-formulated vegan protein supplement, with a clean and clear ingredients label.

The only main downsides are the premium price-tag and the fact that it’s only available in Chocolate flavor.
