Why We Rate Ra Optics

We’re very picky when it comes to the brands that we partner with here at Human Window.

We want to help promote products that we believe can make a genuine positive impact on our readers lives.

After having used blue light blocking glasses after sunset for the last few months, we can honestly say that they have been one of the best purchases we have made.

One thing we love about Ra Optics is the fact that the glasses are actually stylish, so you won’t feel embarrassed going out and about with them on.

About Ra Optics

If you landed on this page from Google, then the chances are that you already know all about Ra Optics and their cool blue blocking glasses.

The company was founded a couple of years ago by Matt Maruca, who became frustrated at the lack of stylish options out there when it came to high quality blue blocking glasses.

Ra Optics provide two different types of lenses – Ultimate Day and Ultimate Night.

The Ultimate Day lenses are mainly clear with a greyish tint, and they have been designed to block out the most harmful frequencies of blue light often emitted from artificial lighting.

Meanwhile, the Ultimate Night lenses are designed to be worn at night after sunset, and they are built to block out all light up to 550 nanometers, which are the wavelengths in the blue and green spectrum.

We spoke to Matt in an interview for Human Window recently, and here’s what he had to say about his journey with Ra Optics.

“I started Ra Optics two years ago because there were no glasses on the market that both blocked all the right frequencies and looked good,” Matt explains.

“There were some glasses that blocked the right frequencies like safety goggles and so on that had certain technical specs. But they didn’t look something like something I’d wear at a high school party, which was the time that I was getting into this.

“There were other companies that have more stylish frames, but they don’t block even all the blue frequencies because I think they’re a little more concerned about aesthetics. So I decided to create Ra Optics.

“We offer night lenses, which block everything up to 550 nanometers. Blue goes up to about 500 nanometers in wavelength. Then there’s green light which goes into a 550nm to 570nm. These wavelengths also disrupt our sleep, but much less so than blue because they’re less energetic.

“We have just a few frame styles, but I have picked them carefully. They’re unisex so that they basically meet very different archetypes of people.

“It’s a lot of fun. And for me it’s like a way to be able to provide something that’s actually from my testing, trying and everything to best product on the market and also able to basically allow me to continue this research.”

Why Block Blue Light After Dark?

You can check out our dedicated article on why blue light at night is not great for our health. But let’s cover the some of the basics quickly here.

When you think about it, our ancestors did not really have access to any kind of light after dark apart from fire and moonlight for most of human history.

Only since the invention of the electric lightbulb have we started prolonging our evenings and disrupting our natural body clocks.

Blue light after dark is everywhere nowadays, whether it be from your devices, television or indoor lighting. Even street lights and subway lighting can be really bright blue.

Simply put, our bodies are not designed to see blue light at night. Blue light was only present in daylight up until fairly recently, so it makes sense to use hacks such as blue light blocking glasses to block out the worst of it after dark.
