TrueDark Twilight Elite – The Basics
So, as we have already worked out, TrueDark are a premium blue light blocking glasses company.
They offer a range of different products and lenses designed to help reduce the effects of ‘junk light’ while indoors and at night.
This review is going to focus specifically on the Twilight Elite model. They have a black aluminum frame and dark red lenses.
If you’re reading this, you’re probably already familiar with why blocking blue light at night might be a good idea, but let’s cover the basics quickly.
For most of human history, the only access to light after dark would have been from moonlight and fire.
Fire has a much redder/yellower color to it than the harsh blue light found in the modern world, such as that emitted by mobile devices, television and indoor artificial lighting.
Blue light essentially tells the brain that it’s time to be awake, as it mimics daylight. For that reason, it’s thought to be a good idea to limit the amount of blue light we are exposed to at night, especially just before going to bed.
Taking a look at the official TrueDark website, the Twilight Elites are presented as a premium product, featuring a “stylish, streamlined design, with a lightweight aircraft-grade aluminum frame”. They are described as “nighttime junk light blockers”.
The product description says that these glasses have been designed to “tell your body it’s dark” and get you ready for bed.
So, now that we’ve covered the basic facts on what you need to know about the TrueDark Twilight Elites, it’s time to take a closer look at the styles and frames.
The Styles and Frames
As you can see, the frames are made of black lightweight aluminum and feature a nice modern style.
They come with a nose pad for added comfort. If you’re not a fan of that, you can remove it using a small screwdriver.
Every pair of TrueDark glasses comes with a protective carrying case and a microfiber cloth for cleaning the lenses.
The first thing we noticed when we opened the box was that the whole product really does have a ‘premium’ feel to it.
The protective case is really high quality, and the frames themselves are clearly made to a very high standard. They feel very sturdy to us, although we haven’t accidentally sat on them yet for a proper test!
The slightly disappointing thing was that there were not more styles on offer. This is where brands like Ra Optics and BLUblox really come into their own by offering multiple styles to suit any person.
Now that we’ve covered the frames and style, let’s focus on the all important part of this TrueDark Twilight Elite review – the lenses and the effect they had for us.
The Lenses and the Effect
The lenses of the Twilight Elites are dark red to the eye.
It’s important to note that these lenses do not block out all blue light. Instead, the official website says that 98 per cent of blue, green and violet wavelengths are blocked.
What’s cool about TrueDark’s product is that they feature patent-pending technology that uses pure solid colored lenses, rather than a color tint painted over a clear lens (which is the case with most blue blockers). This sets them apart in terms of being properly scratch resistant and durable.
Sure, you may find some other blue blockers for a cheaper price, but they will likely use clear lenses which have been tinted, rather than tinted lenses to begin with.
When trying them on for the first time, we noticed that they certainly make everything look red!
The main time when we noticed they let in a bit of bluer light was when watching television at night. We found that our lenses from BLUblox and Ra Optics did a better job of keeping the screen darker, although the difference was pretty minimal.
We chose to wear the Twilight Elites around two hours before bed, although the instructions say that you can use them for anything from between 30 minutes to two hours before bed.
We started to feel sleepy about an hour after putting them on, and they seemed to definitely have the advertised effect for us.
There is an important note on the website saying that you should not drive or operate machinery while wearing these glasses, because they do make things pretty dark.
What Are Customers Saying?
We took a look online and on social media to see what real customers were saying about the TrueDark Twilight Elite glasses.
On Amazon.com, they had an average rating of 4.1 out of 5 stars from around 20 reviews, which is pretty positive.
We checked the official TrueDark website, but at the time of writing, there were no reviews on there.
We did find a lot of posts on social media. On Instagram, there were lots of people posting about how the glasses had helped them, which was encouraging to see.
• They are a premium-priced product, which means they might not fit into everyone’s budget.
• They do not block out 100% of blue light. If you’re looking for some blue blocking glasses to accompany your nighttime device use or simply want to block out all blue light together, we recommend checking out Ra Optics and BLUblox as alternatives.
Anything Else to Consider?
We’re big fans of blue light blocking glasses. We noticed an immediate difference after having started using them for just a few nights in a row.
However, good health requires a multi-action approach. You shouldn’t expect blue blocking glasses to make all the difference for you on their own.
You’ll need to make sure that you’re sticking to a good diet, getting plenty of quality sleep and exercising regularly to help maintain good health.
If you’re thinking about making any drastic lifestyle changes, we recommend first speaking to a certified medical professional.
Blue light blocking glasses can indeed make a huge difference when used for a couple of hours before bed.
But you shouldn’t expect them to work miracles on their own.
TrueDark Review Conclusion – Final Thoughts
So, that brings us to the end of our review of the TrueDark Twilight Elite blue blocker glasses.
Overall, we rate this product as one of the best quality blue light offerings out there if you’re looking to tone down your exposure to blue light after dark.
The frames and lenses are made of really high quality materials, and the whole product has an impressive ‘premium’ feel to it.
The only downsides are that the lenses do not block out 100 per cent of blue light, and they also carry a premium price tag.
